Species: Yellow Uromastyx
Scientific Name: Uromastyx geyri
Origin: These lizards are native to north Africa and the Middle East.
Lifespan: If you pay attention to providing high-quality uromastyx care, they can live for over 25 years, and quite possibly up to 60
Size: 10-30 Inches
Enclosure Type: The enclosure for your Yellow Uromastyx should be spacious enough to allow them to move around comfortably. Make sure the enclosure has a secure lid to prevent escape.
Enclosure Size: Although uromastyx lizards vary widely in size, a good rule of thumb is to plan for no smaller than a 4’L x 2’W x 2’H / 1.2 x 0.6 x 0.6m enclosure.
Substrate: Suitable substrates include reptile substrate, reptisand, desert sand, and play sand.
Décor: Good decor options include cork hollows and flats, cholla wood, ghost wood, grape wood, drought tolerant, nontoxic live plants, magnetic ledges, and a 3D background.
Water: Uromastyx are well adapted to living in drought conditions and get most of the water they need from their food. However, if the enclosure is well-ventilated, there is no harm in always providing a small bowl of fresh water.
Temperature: Basking surface temperature: 120-130°F (49-55°C)
Cool zone temperature: ~85°F (29°C)
Humidity: Uromastyx require very low ambient humidity levels — around 20-30%, as measured by a digital probe hygrometer with the probe placed on the ground on the cool side of the enclosure. Humidity levels that are consistently higher than that can make your uromastyx sick
Lighting: Uromastyx are diurnal, which means that they are most active during the day. This also means that they are stimulated by the presence of bright white light in their environment, and they require strong, high-quality UVB lighting for survival.
Type Of Diet: Herbivorous
Types Of Food: Collard greens, cactus pad, spring mix, arugula, kale, pea shoots, alfalfa, bok choy, carrot greens, spinach, dandelion greens, hibiscus leaves, endive, clover sprouts
Feeding Schedule: Adult uromastyx should be fed every other day to every three days, while juveniles need daily feedings due to their rapid growth.
Supplements: To ensure that your uromastyx is getting all the vitamins and minerals that they need, you will need a calcium powder and a multivitamin powder or a good all-in-one like Arcadia Earthpro A or Repashy Superveggie. For best results, use as directed by the manufacturer. Also add a pinch of organic bee pollen powder or granules to your pet’s salad once a week.
