Origin: North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia.
Lifespan: 15-20 Years
Size: About 6 Feet
Enclosure Type: A rat snake will thrive in a wide variety of cage setups. You can use a glass terrarium, a plastic reptile cage, or a homemade cage of your own design.
Enclosure Size: A minimum of 40 gallons for adults, with ample space for movement and climbing.
Substrate: Use sand, coconut fiber, or a mix of soil and sand to replicate their arid habitat.
Décor: Provide hiding spots, rocks, and branches to encourage climbing and exploration.
Water: Your rat snake should always have access to a large bowl or tub of fresh, clean water. It should be large enough for the snake to curl up inside if it’s in the mood for a soak. Scrub the water dish with veterinary disinfectant such as Rescue or F10SC weekly for good hygiene.
Temperature: Maintain daytime temperatures of 80-90°F with a basking spot around 95°F, and nighttime temperatures between 70-75°F.
Humidity: Keep humidity levels low, around 30-40%, to match their natural environment
Lighting: They do not require additional UVA/UVB lighting, although providing it can be greatly beneficial for their health, immune system, and overall wellness.
Type Of Diet: Carnivorous
Types Of Food: Rodents and other small mammals, small birds, bird eggs, smaller amphibians and reptiles, and other smaller vertebrates.
Feeding Schedule: Juveniles: Feed pinky mice every 5-7 days.
Subadults: Offer small to medium mice every 7-10 days.
Adults: Provide adult mice or small rats every 10-14 days
Supplements: Just like you wouldn’t skip your daily vitamins, your scaly friend needs specific supplements like calcium powder and vitamin D3 to maintain strong bones and proper growth.
