Species: Club Tailed Iguana
Scientific Name: Ctenosaura quinquecarinata
Origin: Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. They are primarily found in the states of Yucatan, Quintana Roo, and Campeche.
Lifespan: 15 - 20 years
Size: 1.5 - 2 feet
Enclosure Type: Ensure your iguana is able to climb to a reasonable height, as they are arboreal. An enclosure that’s too small will cause your pet stress, depression, and could ultimately lead to a shorter lifespan.
Enclosure Size: 6’x 6’x 4’
Substrate: Dry substrates such as sand can be used to mimic their natural environment, always use reptile safe sand, ingestion of sand can cause impaction, most reptile sands are designed to be digestible in small amounts.
Décor: Tree branches, flowers, hideout boxes, water and food bowls and so on. Placing all these accessories and furniture will directly impact the quality of an iguana’s life. A habitat with minimal accessories will also make an iguana’s life very boring.
Water: Provide a dish big enough for drinking and bathing or two seperate dishes.
Temperature: Maintain a basking spot temperature of 35-40°C. Provide a gradient, with the cooler side around 25-39°C. Use a heat source like a basking light and a heat mat for heating. Nighttime temperatures can drop to 23°C.
Humidity: A humidity of 30-50% should be maintained. Mist enclosure occasionally to maintain that humidity.
Lighting: Provide a UVB light source (12%) for at least 10-12 hours a day to support calcium metabolism and overall health.
Type Of Diet: Omnivorous but mainly consisting of plants.
Types Of Food: Crickets, roaches, mealworms, leaves, fruits, and flowers
Feeding Schedule: Most young iguanas need to eat daily, while adult iguanas can be fed daily or every other day. If your iguana is overweight, feeding every other day or every third day may be sufficient.
Supplements: Dust insects with calcium and vitamin supplements 2-3 times a week.
